Astronomers Young and Old

Introduction
In layman terms, an astronomer can be defined as a scientist who observes and studies the planets, stars, galaxies and other objects and matter outside the Earth's atmosphere. It is essential to understand the fact that before 1750, astronomy and astrology had no distinction.
Astronomers study celestial bodies and phenomena that exist or have their source in deep space. Dissimilar from other scientific studies, astronomers cannot directly interact with the extraterrestrial bodies, so they have to resort to thorough surveillance in order to make new discoveries. Usually astronomers use telescopes or other similar devices to accomplish such feats.
It is a general misconception that Astronomers dedicate their professional lives working late hours, peering keenly through telescopes in lonely, cold observatories. In actual fact, Astronomers normally spend no more than few weeks a year at a satellite control station. Astronomers utilize research facts and figures to evaluate the composition of galaxies, quasars, stars, and planets and to gauge radio, infrared, gamma, and X-ray emissions from external sources. Astronomers concentrate on consistent patterns in the data they accumulate, and then develop theories by means of mathematical applications. Information gathered from other astronomers often compliments their individual findings.
The Bible says: 'And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. The final outcome of any scientific research is the distribution of the knowledge gained. Astronomers usually publish their observations or theories through scientific journals.
Categories
Generally astronomers fall into two categories: Theorists and Observers. The combined findings of both these groups bring about advances in the field of astronomy. Observational astronomers study the stars and galaxies using instruments such as radio signals, optical and X-ray telescopes, spectrographs, and satellite-mounted television cameras with computer-controlled image intensifiers.
Whereas, theoretical astronomers work on formulating new theories from observations they make themselves or derive from those made by other astronomers. They develop mathematical equations using the laws of physics.
Skills
Astronomers usually possess good observation skills and are capable of making sense of what they see. Astronomers are characteristically good at math, very analytical, rational, and capable of sound analysis (about science, anyway). The most valuable trait astronomers have is tolerance and resolve for sticking to a complicated problem or theory until they have seen it through - which may even take years.
